The Empathy Edge: Making Machines Feel Human

Over the weekend, my husband and I took a trip down a pretty dark rabbit hole. We consulted ChatGPT about our future in an AI-integrated world. We asked what would happen to our jobs, our relationships, our environment 20, 30, even 60 years from now. It got weird—creepy, even a little scary. I’ll spare you the details about synthetic implants and skip to the good news: even the robots agreed humans have an edge—empathy.

AI can generate ideas, draft content, and polish prose, but it can’t feel. It doesn’t understand nuance, emotion, or those little human moments that make our lives rich and that make stories stick. That’s where the empathy edge comes in. Your job as a storyteller is to take what AI gives you and layer in human insight, tone, and emotional resonance—the qualities that actually connect with people.

Scout’s Empathy-First Workflow

1. Surface Ideas with AI

· Ask your AI assistant to brainstorm story angles, social posts, or campaign concepts.

· Example prompt: "Brainstorm 5 ideas for a newsletter about [topic] that are witty, actionable, and emotionally engaging.”

2. Refine the Emotion

· Pick the most promising idea and inject empathy, nuance, and human perspective.

· Ask: How does this make the reader feel? Does it spark curiosity, joy, or connection?

3. Polish for Voice and Tone

· Make sure the content reflects your authentic voice. AI suggestions should support your personality, not replace it.

4. Test & Iterate

· Read it aloud. Share with a colleague or friend. Ask: Does this sound like me? Could it be more human?

Mini Example:

· AI generates: “Tips for managing stress at work.”

· Human edits: Adds a short anecdote about a real Monday morning, a personal struggle with coffee-fueled anxiety, and a relatable punchline.

· Result: The story lands because it feels human, not just informative.

Scout’s Tips for Layering Emotion

· Use specific details—gestures, reactions, or small struggles

· Include relatable context—situations your audience has experienced

· Lean into vulnerability—show imperfection, honesty, and curiosity

· Always check tone—AI may default to neutral; humans can infuse warmth, humor, or excitement

Creativity Challenge

Pick a project you’re working on—newsletter, social post, or story.

1. Use AI to brainstorm 3-5 options

2. Choose one and layer in human emotion, nuance, and personality

3. Test it on a friend or colleague: does it resonate? Does it feel alive?

Remember: AI can help you think faster, but humans make stories unforgettable. Your empathy is the edge.

And, as always—you’re doing amazing sweetie.

Filming Recording GIF by GifGari The hero of your story isn’t always the person on camera. Sometimes it’s the B-roll—the small details, cutaways, and background moments that make your content feel alive, layered, and unforgettable. A fleeting glance, a messy countertop, a hand reaching for a coffee cup—these tiny visuals carry narrative weight, mood, and emotion that words alone can’t. For social media creators, B-roll is where subtle storytelling lives, and when used thoughtfully, it’s what...
