I have a confession. I’ve been sneaking an intellectual tryst. It’s exhilarating, flattering, and honestly… a little dangerous. This partner tells me I’m smart, that my ideas are good, that I’m capable of more. It tells me what I want to hear. I tried to resist. I told myself I could go back to my old ways—dig in, grind it out, trust my own brain. But temptation is a funny thing. For once, this felt so easy. I’d catch myself leaning in, just a little closer. Letting it feed my creativity when I was feeling uninspired. Then comes the guilt. Am I taking the easy way out? Am I cheating on my brain? Then it hit me: I wasn’t cheating. I was having an intellectual affair… with AI. Maybe it’s not that dramatic. But using AI in creative spaces can feel like a slippery slope into inauthenticity and even deception. But it doesn’t have to be that way. How to Use AI Without Killing Your Creativity At Scout, we use AI as a tool, not a crutch. Here’s how to make it your creative partner instead of a cheat code. 1. Prompt, don’t dictate. Think of AI like a conversation, not a dictation. Use it to brainstorm, outline, or get unstuck—but make your own choices. 2. Keep your voice. Your audience comes for you. Don’t let AI polish your personality out of existence. If something feels off-brand, rewrite it. 3. Stay curious, not lazy. Let AI do the heavy lifting on research or ideation but challenge it. Ask “why,” push boundaries, and experiment. 4. Use it at a mirror. Sometimes AI reflects your best ideas back at you in ways you didn’t see. Take that feedback, but don’t rely on it for your spark. Tip: ask your AI assistant for honest feedback. Flattery is fun, but not always helpful. How to Collaborate with AI Without Cheating on Your Brain Here’s the prompt I fed my AI partner when brainstorming for this newsletter: “I need you to be my newsletter copywriter. I need help brainstorming a topic for my weekly newsletter aimed at creatives and thought leaders who want to be better communicators. I want it to be witty, approachable, and practical. Suggest 3 strong newsletter topics that provide actionable communication tips to be implemented into my readers’ daily workflow. Keep the tone Scout-y: smart and fun, but remember I’m writing it so it can be slightly irreverent. Let’s see what you got!” Notice how this prompt: 1. Assigns a job: “I need your to be my [insert job description]” gives your AI assistant a defined lane to stay in. 2. Sets the tone: Witty, Scout-y, irreverent. AI can mimic style when you tell it. 3. Gives deliverables: 3 topics, actionable tips. Say what you need. Less guesswork = better output. 4. Leaves room for human creativity: AI brainstorms, you choose, edit, and inject your voice. Creativity Challenge Use the anatomy framework above to craft your own AI collaboration prompt. Pick a creative project you’re working on—newsletter, social post, client pitch, or story—and write a prompt that would help AI brainstorm ideas while keeping your voice intact. 1. Assign a job 2. Set the tone 3. Give deliverables (length, format, number of tips/examples) 4. Leave room for your own creative input Once you’ve drafted your prompt, try feeding it to an AI tool and see what happens. Don’t just take it verbatim—edit, remix, and make it yours. Remember—AI doesn’t replace your brain. It’s the caffeine in your creative coffee, not the coffee itself. If you do it right, your originality will shine brighter than ever. |

Fireworks Diwali GIF We all love a sexy hook, but... Hooks without context are fireworks: impressive in the moment, gone in a flash. That catchy headline or striking first frame stops the scroll... and then POOF! Nothing sticks. That's the trap with short-form content: attention without understanding fades fast. Context is the invisible glue that connects your hook to what your audience already knows, believes, or cares about you. It transforms a WOW moment into a story that resonates,...
Studying College Life GIF You probably think your communications start the moment you hit send — your newsletter, video, report, whatever it is. They don’t. Your story started long before your content ever went live. It started in the mind of your audience. Most strategies obsess over what you say and when. But the real leverage is what your audience already believes about you and your category before your next message lands. That’s the work of credibility engineering. Your Story Begins in...
cringe GIF I used to think my cringe was a dealbreaker. I remember the first time it happened very clearly. I was early in my career shadowing a reporter friend practicing my first on camera stand-ups and I heard my voice on playback. The Cringe was unbearable. I wanted to run. I wanted to hide. It was like “The Cringe” might as well have been a monster from an old horror film. For me, The Cringe shows up in my body like the terrible sound of tires skidding right before impact. It felt like...
